We started the day early and hopped in the bus toward IPEN. IPEN is a research institute specializing in nuclear physics. After an introductory presentation we were brought around some laboratories. This included a corrosion lab, a microscopy hallway and a metal powder processing lab. This however is only a small part of what the institute works on. Unfortunately, we were unable to visit the nuclear reactor. This was due to an electrical malfunction. The manager recommended a place for lunch where we could enjoy a buffet and pay by weight. It was nice to see some vegetables for once 🙂

After lunch we headed to the next visit which was at IPT. IPT is also a research institute and can be compared to TNO in The Netherlands. As the research is very broad the set ups and labs that were shown were all very different. We started off at a biomass gasification lab. Next l, we were brought to the naval research building. Here they have a very long pool to simulated ocean waves to measure drag and other effects on small scale ship designs. Our next stop was at hydrogen research. They showed us the PEM used to produced hydrogen. Then the compression units to make the hydrogen fuel. They showed us some hydrogen fueled cars and finally a refueling station. On our way back we made a surprise stop at the biotechnology lab. They quickly showed us around and told us briefly what they were working on. This all concludes our program. Now we head back to the hotel and we have a free evening to enjoy. See you tomorrow!
